Yaya Toure makes FIFA Ballon d’Or Shortlist

Manchester City midfielder, Yaya Toure, is the only African nominated for football’s top individual accolade, the 2015 FIFA Ballon d’Or. The Ivorian midfielder is among a 23-man shortlist released by world football’s governing body yesterday. Toure is joined on the list by four time winner Lionel Messi, current holder Cristiano Ronaldo and fellow City teammate Sergio Aguero. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland on the 11th of January 2016.

Toure, 32, who has been nominated for the award five times, is a four-time African Player of the Year, and is joined on the list by City teammates Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne.

“To be honest, I think that some Africans deserve more light [to be shed on them] and, why not, to feature in this list,” he said. “I know it’s hard to find successors to Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o who set the bar very, very high.

“But we should definitely pay more attention to Africans in these circumstances”, “I admit it’s quite frustrating,” he said. “I could have shouted my frustration from the rooftops a bit like Eto’o did previously.

“But it’s not my style of working — I don’t want to victimise myself.”

As captain of Ivory Coast, Toure will have a say in who is announced as the winner of the award on Jan. 11, 2016.
