AN International NGO on Tuesday, October 6 2013 conducted surgeries on more than 200 children born with mouth deformities at the Coast General Hospital, Mombasa.

Operation Smile conducted surgeries on children with cleft lips and palate conditions, caused by lack of proper nutrition of mothers during pregnancy.

The organisation’s Executive Director, Esperent Mulumba, said the campaign is aimed at giving affected children a reason to smile.

He said many parents hide children born with the deformities unaware that it can be treated. “I appeal to parents to come out and let their children get this free surgery,” Mulumba said.

Cleft lips and palate is common in Mandera, Wajir and other poverty-stricken regions since parents cannot afford good meals especially during pregnancy.

Operation Smile Coordinator and Clinical officer, Julia Kibe, said the deformity is caused by lack of calcium, ions, proteins and folic acid.
