Algeria opens new 350,000 Tonne Capacity Sugar Refinery

The Ministry of Industry in Algeria has announced the opening of a new sugar refinery with a capacity of 350,000 tonnes a year, in the country.

Officials told Reuters production capacity would double to 700,000 tonnes a year “within months”.

The refinery’s output is expected to serve the domestic Algerian market, which is estimated to consume 1.2 mln tonnes a year.

Family-owned Cevital had been the sole sugar refiner in the North African country with a capacity of around 1 million tonnes a year. It imports most of its raw sugar from Brazil.
