Johannesburg’s member of the Mayoral Committee Department of Economics, Ruby Mathang said: “We are excited to host DEMO Africa 2016 in South Africa. This presents a great opportunity to cross-fertilize ideas across African start-ups, as well as showcase our talents and skills in the innovation ecosystem. The teams will receive coaching and mentorship to fine-tune their products and business models before we present them to the world. They also stand to benefit from PR support and the promotion of the launch video after the convention.”
Last year, more than 600 start-ups applied to launch at DEMO Africa but a mere 30 out of these were selected to showcase at the DEMO Africa platform in Lagos, Nigeria. Several of the start-ups are already engaging with investors while others are in the final stages of closing their initial round of funding.
This year’s entry categories will include health, education, agriculture, commerce, leisure and hospitality, logistics, renewable energy, manufacturing, and banking and financial services.
The DEMO Africa 2016 outreach program will include the DEMO innovation tours and will take place between April and May 2016.
