Nigeria’s Falconets cruised into the final of the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup after overcoming North Korea 6-2 at the Moncton Stadium in semifinal match on Wednesday.
It is the second time that the Falconets will reach the final of the competition after they lost 0-2 to Germany in the showpiece game in the 2010 edition.
Asisat Oshoala scored four goals while Courtney Dike and Uchechi Sunday completed the rout.
It was Dike who opened Nigeria’s goals account against the Korean in the second minute of the match from Oshoala’s assist.
At the half-way mark of the first 45 minutes, the impressive Oshoala pounced on a defensive blunder by the Koreans and she rounded Kim Chol Ok in goal to double Nigeria’s lead.
Just a minute past the hour mark, Ri Un Sim pulled one back for North Korea with a deft finish after cutting inside of two of her Nigerian markers.
Nigeria finished the first period on the back foot but started the second in blazing fashion to finish off the Koreans.
Ten minutes into the business end of the match, Sunday came off the bench to make it 3-1 to Nigeria and on the hour-mark, Oshoala put the daylight between the Africans and the Asians with a 20-yard strike. It was 4-1 at that point.
Two minutes later, the Koreans reduced Nigeria’s lead to two through Jon So-Yon scored from the spot after Ugo Njoku handled the ball in her own goal area.
In the 68th minute, Oshoala scored her hat-trick after racing past the Korean defence to shoot into an empty goal post.
However, the Rivers Angels attacking midfielder put the icing on the cake with the simplest of finish from close range to make it 6-2 with five minutes to go.
It was the fourth goal for Nigeria’s number four in the semis. Oshoala was named player of the match afterwards.
Nigeria now await the winners of Germany or France from the second semifinal for Sunday’s final match billed for the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Canada.
